| A phenomenon from the world of computers, when the image freeze and the computer get "locked up" and needs a re-start, to function again. I have always thought of them to be beautiful, a kind of frozen moment. Still with a strong presence - a perfect autencity. |
Between zero and one - there is another space. Perhaps similar to the phenomenon of a freezage, which I see as momentarily, unexpected, and as acomplex image, in the contemporary, a now, combined with strings and threads, to memories, experiences and hidden facts. I believe I am trying to produce a "density" in my works, a kind of ethnographic thick descriptions (Geertz, 1976) of certain personal situations, by using, re-using and staging pieces made in the past, performances made just recently, and new objects. Inspired by artists using performance, just as parts in complex patterns of staging a situation, as for instance Joan Jonas is doing, I find meaningful. I have come to a conclusion that some of my earlier works needs to be staged, and re-arranged in a more complex way. Perhaps they never were free standing objects? Perhaps they were just, bits and pieces from an ongoing process? Perhaps I have just misinterpreted their message? I took a step back, a few years ago, to work more thorough and in depth with those, shall I call them artefacts. After visiting Joan Jonas exhibition "Five Works", in Queens Museum of Arts in 2004, I found it hard or even meaningless to accomplish something. My own attempt to do anything called art, turned into pale fragments without direction, compared to what she had accomplished. It took me years to get back - but then again, in thanks to that particular exhibition! For some reason and for years ever after, I have worked in a similar direction. Gradually it has become clear to me. If I earlier, worked fast and instant, I now work with slow processes - in a kind of holistic fashion, involving: performances, videos, artefacts, photos, poems, and anything I find necessary to reach to thick descriptions.
